Appalachian links English 1000 and Freshman Seminar for first semester freshmen. Students intending to be education majors take the two courses. As part of the service learning component required for the Freshman Seminar, students tutor at one of the local middle schools.

Bowling Green State University Partners in Context and Community (PCC) is a residential learning community designed to prepare middle childhood teachers. Part of the program involves an integration of first-year English composition courses with introductory education courses and a service learning experience in urban schools. The program also offers a variety of co-and extra-curricular activities with academic linkages. The learning community is part of a larger, U.S. Department of Education project aimed at reforming urban education.

Florida State University

FSU offers the “Cawthon Education Learning Community” (ELC) to first-year students who may be majoring in Education. This living/learning community links residence hall and academic experiences. The goal of the ELC is to “create a close-knit supportive environment where new students will have the opportunity to meet other freshmen who are interested in Education.” Service learning experiences, as well as opportunities to take classes in the residence hall, are part of the ELC.

State University of New York at Potsdam Teacher education students at SUNY-Potsdam take clusters of courses. Four of these clusters are at the elementary level, and one is at the secondary level. The secondary level cluster, called Learning Community I or “Introduction to Teaching the English Language Arts Grades 5-12,” includes three courses: English Language Arts; Teaching Students with Special Needs, and Practicum I. Educational Psychology must be taken concurrently. In the practicum, students must observe, tutor, and teach in middle school, junior high, and high school classrooms, approximately six hours a week for six weeks. http://www.potsdam.edu/EDUC/
